We throw roasted soybeans either out the front door or at a family member wearing a demon mask (sorry, Dad!). Why beans? In Japanese, “mame” (beans) sounds like the word for “destroying evil.” After the throwing, you’re supposed to eat the number of beans corresponding to your age (plus one for good luck). It’s a bit of a choking hazard, so be careful! 😂 Another Setsubun tradition is eating ehomaki — a thick sushi roll packed with lucky ingredients. You’re supposed to eat it silently, without cutting it, while facing the year’s lucky direction, all while making a wish. "Setsubun" literally means "seasonal division." It is the day before the beginning of Spring in the old lunar calendar, usually falling on February 3rd. 👹 It is a really fun festival for kids. We buy roasted soybeans and get ready for a special ritual called "Mamemaki" (bean throwing) to purge bad luck and evil spirits from the home.
